As summer rolls in across New South Wales from the buzzing streets of Parramatta to the beach side homes in Bondi, from the leafy suburbs of the North Shore to the inland warmth in Liverpool -one thing is certain: air conditioners will be working overtime!

But with a few smart steps you can stay cool and keep your power bills under control.

At Gemelec Electrical Services, servicing Greater Sydney & surrounds, we know a thing or two about wiring, insulation and aircon that makes all the difference.

Here are our top tips so you can stay comfortable without shocking your wallet.

Save energy at home this summer!

1. Choose the right air conditioner and maintain it well

  • Size matters: Oversized units cycle less efficiently; undersized ones run constantly. Get a unit that suits your room size. If you live in Sydney’s inner west, older homes might have larger open spaces - ensure you choose capacity accordingly.

  • Energy-efficient models: Look for units with high star ratings (eg 4-5 stars) and inverter technology. These run more smoothly and consume less power.

  • Keep filters clean: Dirty filters reduce airflow and force your unit to work harder. Clean or replace them every few weeks during heavy use.

  • Annual servicing: A well-maintained aircon is more efficient.

2. Smart usage habits

  • Set sensible temperatures: Around 23-25°C is usually comfortable and much more efficient than cranking down to 18-20 °C. Each degree cooler can add significantly to your bill.

  • Use timers & programmable thermostats: Cool the house during off peak hours, pre-cool just before you need it and switch off when you're out. If you live somewhere like Maroubra, Coogee, Mosman or Manly, the afternoon sea breeze might allow you to raise the temp partway through the day.

  • Ceiling fans + aircon combo: Use fans to help distribute cool air so you can raise the AC temperature a few degrees but still feel comfortable.

  • Close doors & windows: Prevent cool air escaping and hot air entering. Use blinds or curtains (especially west or south facing windows) to block out direct sun—this matters a lot in suburbs like Blacktown or Campbelltown.

3. Improve your home to reduce cooling load

  • Insulation & sealing: Proper insulation in the roof, walls and underfloor helps keep heat out. Seal gaps around windows, doors and ductwork. Homes in Ryde, Hornsby, or The Hills Shire can especially benefit from this.

  • Reflective roofing or light-coloured paints: Dark roofs absorb heat, pushing up internal temperatures. Reflective roofing or lighter external colours help reduce heat gain.

  • Shade with trees, awnings & pergolas: Planting trees or installing awnings over windows especially those on the western side, can reduce the heat coming in. Suburbs like Penrith or Campbelltown where the sun is strong in the afternoon benefit a lot.

  • Upgrade or install efficient doors & windows: Double glazing, or at least good quality seals and screens, helps. Even simple upgrades like blinds, shutters or external shades make a difference.

4. Use off-peak times & electricity tariffs wisely

  • Understand your energy plan: If you have a plan with peak, off-peak or shoulder rates, run major energy-heavy usage (like laundry) during off-peak. In many parts of Sydney, off-peak hours offer much cheaper electricity.

  • Stagger heavy appliances: Avoid running aircon, oven, dryer, etc at the same time—this reduces demand and can avoid overloading circuits (and spiking bills).

5. Smart lighting & appliances

  • LED lighting: LEDs use far less power than halogens or incandescent bulbs and emit less heat—helping your cooling system. Swap them in common areas like the living room, kitchen or hallways..

  • Energy-efficient appliances: When buying new fridges, freezers, dishwashers or laundry machines, check energy rating labels. Even small differences add up over summer use.
